Note:
If you were to make this statement figuratively, not literally (i.e. according to the laws of physics!), then you would have to phrase your statement like this:

“...nowadays, it almost seems as though modern transport has shortened the distances between places ...”

...this lets the listener know you haven’t made a mistake or said something that should be logical but is not. When speaking figuratively, use:

‘It almost seems as though...’
‘It is almost as if...’
